Target group

Employees responsible for first aid at the dental clinic and other dental clinic staff.

Objectives

The aim of the training is to provide basic knowledge and practical skills for saving the victim’s life in the event of an accident and for providing first aid.

Topics covered

The training consists of three parts.

    Part 1:

  • The role of the first aid provider in the rescue chain
  • ERC recommendations for healthcare institutions for the prevention and diagnosis of sudden cardiac arrest
  • Analysing critical situations, assessing the condition of the victim
  • Alerting emergency services via the Emergency Response Centre
  • Resuscitation (adults, children, pregnant women, AED, available tools), ACLS algorithms.
  • The training is based on the latest ERC algorithms (updated in March 2021). This section reviews several emergency calls to dental institutions (what happened, what was done by the dental team, what the ambulance crew did, the diagnosis, and discussion).

Part 2: Case-Study method. Various situational tasks are distributed (what has happened either in a dental clinic or general practitioner’s office), and participants are asked to solve them as they believe is appropriate, using the tools available to them in their work situations, including those available in the medical office.

Case topics: acute coronary syndrome, stroke and TIA, diabetic coma, seizure syndrome, anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock. During the discussion, recommendations are given on how to act at the pre-hospital stage, what tools would be practical to have, what to monitor etc.

Part 3: Solving practical situations in pairs. The group is divided into pairs, and an event is staged for each pair, which they are asked to solve.

The following are observed: decision-making ability, speed of decision-making, operational efficiency, cooperation between the two rescuers, alerting the Emergency Response Centre, resuscitation techniques and use of the AED, and handing over the report to the ambulance service.

  • Knowledge of emergency conditions in dental care
  • Ability to assess the condition of the victim and select the appropriate first aid strategy
